Mollie Border, wife of a wounded soldier, reached out to TAMCO Foundation to pave her driveway in order to make it wheelchair accessible for her husband John. To grant Mollie’s wish, TAMCO Foundation teamed up with several organizations in the Tampa community and gathered necessary materials and services to give the Borders their new driveway! Thank you to all our partners who don’t think twice about landing a hand to our wounded soldiers.

A Soldier's Story

"I still remember lying in the hospital bed thinking to myself, “My military career is over.  Now what am I going to do?”  On September 26th 2003, while en route to four days of rest and recuperation (“R&R”), my Hummer was ambushed by a roadside bomb outside of Tikrit, Iraq.  As a result of the attack, I lost my left eye, ruptured both ear drums, suffered a minor traumatic brain injury and nerve damage to my left arm and hand.  That’s the thing with war – there’s no time out when you are injured."

TAMCO Foundation's Gary Boggs has written an article called "A Soldier's Story" which was featured in Injury Board's quartly magazine The Safety Report. Gary's article can also be viewed on the official Safety Report website. www.thesafetyreport.com

IMPACT LAKELAND
Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland
     www.cfgl.org

In February 2010, TAMCO Foundation received a $10,000 individual donation through the IMPACT LAKELAND grant program of the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland. Grant funds will support the Embracing Florida’s Wounded Heroes program in the Greater Lakeland region. Funds will be utilized for the Family Support core program to provide timely, effective and enduring support to wounded heroes and their families to assist in the healing process and the rebuilding of lives. Family Support helps re-engage wounded veterans with their families. Families of wounded veterans often endure long treatment and recovery stays in hospitals while having to face challenges of new permanent needs of their wounded hero. This program helps to increase self confidence, develop social interaction, rebuild and connect the families. Youth camp scholarships will also be provided to children of wounded veterans to attend coping camps, summer camps and/or afterschool programs.

A HOME FOR A HERO

A Golf Fundraiser sponsored by Building Homes for Heroes. This Year's recipient of a home to be built in Central Florida is Army Sergeant Joel Tavera who was wounded in Iraq in March of 2008. Joel still undergoes care at the James Haley VA Hospital here in Tampa. The US Army has informed the Tavera Family that he is the second most severly injured Army Soldier in the war in Iraq. Sgt Tavera is a great American Hero; uplifting, inspiring, and a pleasure to be around.

Mr. Jack Thompson (Founder of TAMCO Foundation), Retired Brigadier General Chip Diehl (Executive Director, Embracing Florida's Wounded Heroes) joined Mr. Dave Reynolds (Tampa Sportscaster) and Mr. Jeff Gareau (Operation Homefront) for an enjoyable afternoon with over 150 golfing supporters; hosted by The Windermere Country Club in Orlando.

Participating at the event was Specialist BJ Jackson (Spokesman for TAMCO Foundation) shown below with Jack and Chip after sinking a birdie putt for his team. It's great to see BJ again! He will be joining us for our Grand Slam Fishing Tournament on April 16th.
