Fishing for Soldiers
TAMCO Foundation’s 5th Annual Fishing Tournament Helps Wounded Heroes

Tampa, Fl January 26, 2011 - Fishing brings an equal share of relaxation and excitement. Two things that are highly desirable to a soldier wounded from the war in Iraq. TAMCO Foundation’s 5th Annual Grand Slam Fishing Tournament is for some the only way they’re able to enjoy such an experience.

TAMCO Foundation is a non-profit organization that assists Florida’s wounded soldiers who return from Iraq and Afghanistan. To raise funds for their “Embracing Florida’s Wounded Heroes,” program they host an annual fishing tournament, allowing wounded soldiers and their families time out on the water.

“The soldiers received healing therapy by being on the water, therapy which cannot be duplicated in a structured environment," said Abby Wolf, CTRS, PMRS Polytrauma Recreation Therapist for the James A. Haley VA Medical Center.

“We’re looking for new sponsors and anglers to help support the tournament,” said Jack Thompson, Founder and CEO of TAMCO Foundation. “It’s a win-win, you get to support a great cause and have fun doing it!”

The tournament is one of the biggest in the Bay, with over 50 boats in participation guided by Tampa Bay’s finest captains. “Every year I seem to have more admiration for these guys that usually get looked past. They truly are our heroes and deserve the best,” said Captain Ric Liles.

The tournament is kicked off Thursday evening with a captain’s party crawfish boil, a live and silent auction, live entertainment, and a buffet of endless crawfish. Tournament day is a frenzy of excitement; where soldiers and fisherman alike compete to win prizes and more over support a great cause.

Entertainment will include Lester Freeman and “D” Band, with a special appearance by renowned vocalist Belinda Womack, performing the Star Spangled Banner.

Thompson understands the value in allowing these soldiers and their families to participate in family unity programs such as these. “The wounded forego hardships and difficulties on a daily basis and this is a way for them to get away from all that,” he said. “It really is the least we can do.”
